FRIDAY November 21 2014 Issue 1087

New green for new season Local sweat, English carpet and Australian expertise has resulted in a brand new artificial green at Maraetai Bowling Club. Club members, assisted by local trades people and members of the community, recently rolled up the old green. Experts from Australian based company, Berry Bowling Systems, then prepared the sub surface, laid an undercarpet, and then the state-of-the-art Needlepunch surface carpet imported directly from England. The club celebrated the opening of the new green with a lunch last Sunday attended by visitors from other clubs, sponsors, charitable trusts who provided some of the funding and other invited guests. Like all carpets, this one will need to be vacuumed frequently. The carpet comes with a seven year guarantee on the condition a maintenance schedule is kept to. This involves vacuuming it once a month then twice a year it is shampooed. An industrial vacuum cleaner has been provided and a small brush cleaner. Social bowls is now underway every Friday from 6pm. This is the opportunity for anyone to come along and have a go at the game – on a brand new surface. Bowls will be provided along with some coaching. It will continue through to the end of daylight savings (except for two weeks over Christmas). President Derek McKeen says the club will now be looking to the future. “The people in charge of the club over last 50 years put money away for a contingency fund which built up over the years,” says Derek. “When we started this 20 months ago we knew we had $35-40,000 built up over years. Now we are looking to start a contingency fund again so 15-20 years from now there will be some money available. [for the next green]” The official opening of the Maraetai Bowling Club’s new season was held last Sunday afternoon. The event was attended by 50 people including life members, honorary members, the MP for Hunua (Andrew Bayly), the president of Auckland Bowls (Peter McKechnie), the chairman of Franklin Local Board (Andy Baker) and the three Wairoa representatives (Malcolm Bell, Angela Fulljames and Lynn Murphy) along with representatives from Howick, Bucklands Beach, Pakuranga, Hunters Corner and Clevedon Bowling Clubs. Derek McKeen declared the new green open and rolled the first jack while Secretary/Treasurer Bryan Tutty had the honour of rolling the first bowl. Visitors, including Andrew Bayly, and members then played two short games on the new green.

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (November 21st 2014)

Good time of year to thank the volunteers

Waitawa park

and Cath Gapes as they are moving to Australia. Their efforts over the years have been huge. They were instrumental in last weekend’s dinner for hit and run victim Richard Samuels, but are best known for being keen organisers of the Canfish fishing day where teenagers battling with cancer are given a day out on the water to enjoy the fun of fishing and the chance to relax for a while. Thanks guys! Meanwhile, I would like to make an important point about the future of volunteering in our small coastal and rural communities. It is becoming increasingly obvious that Auckland Council will not be spending any big amounts of money on projects of a social and community nature out in our part of the world any time soon. It has other priorities. So we can all moan and complain, but the reality is that it won’t make any difference. So it comes down to the old saying: If you want a job doing properly, do it yourself. Even with all the many, many volunteer run projects, services and events we already have, there is scope for more. Some imagination and lateral thinking may be required. Further around the coast from Beachlands-

Waitawa Regional Park, near Kawakawa Bay, was partially reopened at Labour Weekend but there is still no access to the main beach, Mataitai Bay. It has been closed since mid-July when heavy rainfall caused several significant slips. Major repair work is still required to stabilise the slips, reinstate the road and reopen full vehicle access to the main beach, but an interim solution is in place. Southern regional parks principal ranger Tony Oliver said rangers worked hard to create a safe alternative route to the beach and isolate the slip areas so the park could reopen. Visitors are reminded to observe the warnings and to avoid restricted areas. Visitors can park in the car parks above the beach and then can walk to the 10-15 minutes to the beach. Access to the park’s wharf is currently closed due to slips on the Koherurahi Pa site above it.

THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz Franklin councillor Bill Cashmore is always telling us that volunteers are the lifeblood of any community. And, of course, he is absolutely right. This seems like a good week to honour our volunteers because November and December are always pack full of community events, as well as all the many other volunteer run activities that operate week in and week out. At this time of year our weekly “What’s On” column takes up a big chunk of this newspaper. Nearly all the events and activities listed are run by volunteers who do it all for nothing and expect nothing in return. They do it because they love living here and believe passionately that communities are places full of fun, life and people who care for each other. I don’t really like to single anyone out by name because all are important. But I do feel compelled to give a mention to Maraetai’s Paul

Maraetai, there have been some good examples of late. These include the efforts by the Clevedon business community to revamp the Clevedon District Centre and turn it in to a community and business hub. Yes, this did involve council support and some funding, but it was a community run initiative. A few weeks back I attended a community planting day at Kawakawa Bay. Bay residents turned out in numbers to plant thousands of plants along the foreshore in a bid to stop erosion. Again, there was council help but it wouldn’t have happened without Bay people rolling up their sleeves. The Wairoa Landcare Group is another example of a group of residents who have taken it upon themselves to look after their local river and river banks. Then there are the volunteers who look after the habitat of the rare kokako birds in the Hunua ranges...and the list goes on. Increasingly, we will need to look at ways in which we can help ourselves by using our own resources and – dare I say it – our own money via fundraising events, sponsorship and donations.

Meeting to discuss community garden Anyone interested in being part of the Pohutukawa Coast Community Gardens is invited to a public meeting next Wednesday 26 November. The initiative, run through the Beachlands Community Trust, has been established on vacant land between Wakelin Rd and Sunkist

Bay Rd in Beachlands. “We want to engage with the community and provide a place where people can grow vegetables or flowers or run a micro-enterprise,” says trust CEO Jenny Carter. “With section sizes getting smaller and water quite expensive community gardening makes sense and we see

this project as a valuable resource for the community.” She envisages the community garden will be similar to the allotment system run in many English towns. Jenny says anyone interested will, for a small annual membership fee, be allocated a plot of land on which to create their own garden. “We see it as being quite a social place as well for people of all ages and people who want to sell the fresh produce they grow can do so from a small shop we’ll have.” Jenny says the community gardening project has been accepted by Engineers Without Borders, who will draw up hydro-engineering plans to move water around the site for irrigation. The Pohutukawa Coast ‘Listen Up’ Community choir is running a Christmas Choir For A Day workshop, on Saturday November 29 at Maraetai School. The recently formed choir now has more than 20 singers and is again partnering with Kate Bell and Steven Rapana who have directed other community choirs and singing groups around Auckland. “This workshop is the perfect opportunity for anyone who ever had an interest in singing or who wants to be part of a new choir, to come along and be part of something special,” says choir spokesperson Felicity Wooding. “The workshop will be fun, relaxed, informative and rewarding.” She says singing is increasingly known as “the fastest growing non-sport hobby in the western world”. The Christmas Choir for a Day workshop will be held at Maraetai Beach School from 9.30am-4pm. Cost: $70 For more information, or to register for the workshop please contact: Felicity on (09) 536 5426 or email felicitywooding@gmail.com.

4 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (November 21st 2014)

Time to go bald...Coast cancer appeal is back! The third Pohutukawa Coast cancer Appeal is being held at the premises of the Beachlands Chartered Club this Sunday, November 23. This year, orgnaisers have chosen three charities: Breast Cancer, Men’s Health and Kids’ Cancer. “We are hoping that this year will be just as successful as the two previous years. Last year we raised the most money in New Zealand for one event,” says one of the organising team, Karen Gordon. “Someone knows some one who has been affected, either personally or because of the closeness of our village environment on the Pohutukawa Coast. “From Whitford, Beachlands, OmanaMaraetai through to Duders, and Clevedon, Orere, Hunua

and Kawakawa Bay it is the same. We have cried with them, we have prayed with them, and there are the silent prayers… some we have lost.” Statistics show that there will be more than 2700 women and 22 men diagnosed with breast cancer this year. About 3000 men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. There will be 115 children aged 0-14 and 151 aged 15-24 diagnosed with cancer. The Coast appeal will include: • Shave Ya Head, which continues to enjoy amazing support. “Lots of special blokes are going all out, and three women have put their hands up to be Sister Acts...it is so humbling and just so awesome,” says Karen. Funds raised will be split between breast

cancer and men’s health, but every kid that shaves his/her lid to help save a cancer kid, will have that that donation go directly to Kids’ Cancer. • Hungry Hopes Restaurant, in front of the chartered club premises are supporting the cause as well, with a Kiwi Bunch/Lunch and traditional Indian dinner in the evening. Bookings will be essential for these meals and close off for bookings will be this Friday November 21. Big or small groups are welcome. Book a table for 2 or 10. Make it a fun event by coming dressed in pink or sporting a great moustache. Anybody, at anytime can pop in for a coffee and piece of cake. A percentage of sales will go to the appeal’s Pink

Burglars target Whitford property twice in one week A Whitford home has been targeted by burglars twice in one week. The rural property in Wades Rd was first broken into last Thursday morning while the owners were out. The offenders smashed a glass panel in a door to enter and ransacked every room before leaving with the items they stole. “They left a mess and took a lot of electronic equipment as well as jewellery and alcohol,” says a police spokesperson.

Police believe the same offenders were probably responsible for a break in at the same property this Monday. “It’s very unusual for burglars to target the same property so quickly but we believe it is likely to be the same offenders. This time they left a tv outside.” Neighbours alerted police and the offenders fled in a silver hatchback or stationwagon. “We believe the same vehicle has gone on to Ormiston Rd

where another daylight burglary was committed.” A similar daytime burglary was committed in Maraetai several weeks ago. Two of the offenders were apprehended after Police in Manurewa recognised the registration number recorded by neighbours who witnessed the burglary and called it in. “Again if people see anything suspicious happening please call 111 straight away,” says the Police spokesperson.

FEATURE PROPERTY: November 21, 2014

Beachlands - For Sale: Auction It’s amazing what a modern re-build can do. This property has stood on the corner of Cherrie Rd and Second View Ave for a long time. On the outside it retains the look of the original building with its (modern) weatherboard exterior. But on the inside it is as contemporary as anything you will find in Spinnaker Bay. The flat section makes it a family-friendly property. Extensive near-ground level timber decks all around the house make for a big entertaining area with room for outdoor furniture front, back, and even around the side of the house. In the secluded rear of the property is one of the most extraordinary features I’ve yet to come across – a huge rectangular granite slab outdoor dining table big enough to seat a rugby team. It stands on a cobblestone and tile base. There’s also a spectacular mature pohutukawa tree which helps add to the outdoor banquet feel. The front entrance of the house opens into the living area. This features modern bifold doors leading to the rear deck area. Tucked around the corner is a modern kitchen done in a minimalist style with plenty of cupboard space, a flat cooktop, wall oven and double fridgefreezer.

On the other side of the living area is the first of four bedrooms. Another door leads through to a long hallway running the length of the house. There’s a bedroom at either end, one more in the middle, an office, modern bathroom with shower and bath, separate toilet and a separate laundry with door leading to an outside service area. The master bedroom has a walk in wardrobe and its own bifold access to the rear decks. Overall, this is a compact contemporary home with a surprising amount of space that still manages to retain the feel of traditional Beachlands. There is still plenty of scope for a new owner to add their own touches, especially on the outside. The rugby team-sized outdoor dining table, in particular, could be a wonderful and unique feature around which to develop a landscaped garden area. ~ Duncan Pardon

The BeachlandsMaraetai First Response Team is looking for new recruits and is encouraging locals to attend its Open Day on this Saturday, November 22 from 2pm till 5pm at the Beachlands Fire Station on Bell Rd. St John Team Leader Tracey Swinehart says people often assume they need medical or nursing experience which is not the case. “St John provides training which is free and all courses are designed around volunteers and are mostly held on weekends. It is quite a commitment to make but incredibly rewarding – providing a service in our community while developing valuable skills.” Beachlands-Maraetai is one of the busiest first

response teams in New Zealand with about 250 call outs per year. When an ambulance call is received for Beachlands Maraetai, a frontline ambulance responds at the same time as the volunteer first response team. The frontline ambulance will attend, regardless of whether there is anyone available locally or not. When rostered on duty local volunteers carry a pager and can respond within minutes. Most of the team are trained to first responder level which is focused on life saving skills (airway, breathing, circulation) for time critical emergencies, pain relief and stabilisation. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the baseline skill level

Absent are Corrina Weir-Freebairy and Doug Martin. on all frontline ambulances and from there it progresses up to Paramedic and Intensive Care Paramedic which requires a university degree in paramedicine. People who are interested will be invited to come to the weekly training sessions every Wednesday night from 7pm till 9pm. The St John selection process includes a half day assessment covering various physical and reading assessments as well as an interview. Recruits will be ex-

pected to be rostered on at least one night per week and one day/night at least every 3-4 weekends. Tracey says from her perspective the position provides an interesting balance to her day job as a financial controller. “Many of us come from all sorts of different career backgrounds, from administrators to engineers and school teachers. “When a patient and their family are distressed, you are seeing people at their most

vulnerable so trust, empathy, confidentiality and professionalism are very important.” New recruits will learn competencies around equipment handling, ambulance driving and self-defence, so a reasonable level of physical fitness is required. St John is currently voted the most trusted charity organisation in New Zealand. If you’d like to know more about joining the BeachlandsMaraetai First Response Team please contact 0274 773837.
